BTEX- Extended

The current approach of focussing on Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX) for petrochemical site assessments does not always address the contamination completely. This is more evident when sites are weathered but still highly contaminated and does not flag the National Norms and Standards for the Remediation of Contaminated land and soil Quality. We have developed a new test to address this problem and provide a better picture of petrochemical contamination. Furthermore, we have expanded our oxygenates offering and added lead scavengers.

Compounds added to current BTEX suite:

Oxygenates

  • Diisopropyl ether (DIPE)
  • Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE)
  • Tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE)

Lead Scavengers

  • 1,2-Dichloroethane (included in RSA Soil Screening Values)
  • 1,2-Dibromoethane

C3-Alkylbenzenes

  • Isopropylbenzene
  • n-Propylbenzene
  • m-Ethyltoluene
  • P-Ethyltoluene
  • o-Ethyltoluene
  • 1,2,3-Trimethylbenzene (included in RSA Soil Screening Values)

C3-Alkylbenzes are routinely detected in petrol, diesel, paraffin, jet fuel and other petrochemical distillates.
