SAMPLE ANALYSIS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: WASTE ACT (ACT NO.59 OF 2008).
Environmental Pollution Laboratory has developed and implemented a series of tests and ASLP extractions on solid waste as directed by the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act No. 59 of 2008) and the associated Waste Classification and Management Regulations (GNR 634–636). All waste intended for disposal must undergo classification and a Waste Type assessment prior to disposal. This assessment includes the determination of both inorganic and organic constituents specified in GNR 635 using validated analytical methods as well as a SANAS accredited laboratory. All organic analyses are performed in-house, while only approximately 2% of our inorganic analyses are outsourced to selected partners.
ASLP leachates are prepared to determine the leachability of contaminants from solid waste. Two leaching methods are used in accordance with the AS 4439 protocol, as adopted by GNR 635: a Zero Headspace Extraction (ZHE) for volatile organic compounds and a Bottle Leach for non-volatile compounds. The ZHE leaching procedure is specifically designed to minimise the loss of volatile compounds during extraction. The appropriate leaching fluid is selected in accordance with the ASLP procedure prescribed by GNR 635 and AS 4439.
The analytical results are evaluated against the Total Concentration Thresholds (TCT) and Leachable Concentration Thresholds (LCT) specified in GNR 635 to determine the Waste Type (Type 0 to Type 4). The resulting Waste Type is then used to identify the appropriate class of landfill and/or containment barrier requirements for disposal in accordance with the National Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill (GNR 636).
